That fact can make things difficult when residents of this area need to bring their car in for an MOT certificate. Fortunately for them, the answer to their MOT quandary is just a quick drive down the A23; Fallsbrook Motors. At Fallsbrook Motors we provide fast, expert MOT for Tulse Hill residents that will enable them to take care of this bothersome piece of business quickly and reliably.

What Exactly Is an MOT Test?

The MOT test began life 60 years ago as an initiative by the now-defunct Ministry of Transport to try and reduce the number of unsafe vehicles on UK roads. At first, only cars at least 10 years old were inspected with the test concentrating on the brakes, lights, and the steering mechanism. This first iteration of the MOT was a resounding failure. Why? Because it was voluntary. You have to remember that, although Britain had rebounded well after the War, many people at the time still had older cars and few wanted to subject them to a government inspection that might take them off the road.

Nonetheless, because the few cars that were brought in exhibited an extremely high failure rate, the MOT test was soon made mandatory for all vehicles 10 years old and older. There was a predictable amount of blowback from the public about this new regulatory intrusion, but there is no denying that the MOT has been a resounding success. Annual road fatalities in the UK are down more than 75% since the test was initiated, even though there are 3 times as many cars on the road today as there were in the 1960s.

What the MOT Test Checks For

The MOT test has evolved over the years as you might imagine. What began as a test of lights, brakes and steering has come to encompass tyre integrity, windscreen wipers, horn, chassis integrity, the exhaust system, seat belts, wiring, battery, directional indicators, and the accuracy of the speedometer. Not only that, but the deadline for first inspections has been reduced from 10 years to 3 years with a new MOT inspection required every year for cars older than 3 years.

What Happens If I Don't Get an MOT Certificate?

A lot of car owners who take great care of their vehicles understandably feel put upon by having to submit their cars to an MOT test. Still, the law is the law. Failing to bring your car in can have expensive consequences. For instance, if you are pulled over and found to have an expired MOT you could be fined as much as £2,500. But that’s not all.

Failing to bring your car in for inspection by the deadline will result in your insurance being automatically invalidated. If that happens your registration will also be invalidated. Should you continue to drive anyway and get in an accident you could face criminal charges for driving an unauthorised vehicle and any expenses related to the accident will fall entirely on your shoulders. It’s just not worth it.
